Communication in the Medical Field
The communication throughout the medical field is a fascinating machine that has been fine-tuned over many years. Members
of the medical discourse community communicate in many different ways. Nurses relay important information about the patient’s vitals to a physician assistant or doctor by recording information on a medical chart. These medical charts are
filled with abbreviations and medical terminology that may be mind boggling to those who haven’t study the terms. Once the physician assistant or doctor receives the chart they have a good idea of how the patient is doing without even seeing them. After the physician assistant diagnoses the patient they may deem it necessary for the patient to take some form of medication. If that is the case the physician assistant will send a script of the needed medicine to the pharmacist. Once the pharmacist receives the script they will make the medicine and wait for the patient to pick it up. This is how members in the discourse community usually communicate information about a patient. The entire time this process is going on everyone is communicating by referring to the body and its associated components in a science based manor. This medical language is deeply rooted in Latin and can be tricky for many people. Although it may be tricky for many, the medical field has it perfected not only with verbal communication, but also with written communication as well. Along with that, they communicate information not always specific to a patient i.e. latest research and observational studies. They can be found via certain credible medical association websites, trade publications and academic journals. With these, the information is usually very straightforward and fact-based and the writer will most likely be following the APA format. This style is used by most scientists, because of it's specific uniformity. Also, with this style of writing, it is important to be able to see how current the resources are. That is why APA stresses writing the year of publication with citing within papers. The APA also publishes a handbook that is beneficial to those learning how to write in APA format. The book is called Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and can be conveniently purchased on their website. Just click here!
